The crescent (moon) plays a significant role in Islam because of the use of a lunar Islamic calendar to determine the date of Ramadan. The crescent moon, known as Hilal, defines the start and end of Islamic months as it did for the Babylonian calendar. The Quran emphasises that the moon is a sign of God, not itself a god.
